AOD-9604: Research Status, Safety, and Quality Standards

Product Usage: This PRODUCT IS INTENDED AS A RESEARCH CHEMICAL ONLY. This designation allows the use of research chemicals strictly for in vitro testing and laboratory experimentation only. All product information available on this website is for educational purposes only. Bodily introduction of any kind into humans or animals is strictly forbidden by law. This product should only be handled by licensed, qualified professionals. This product is not a drug, food, or cosmetic and may not be misbranded, misused, or mislabeled as a drug, food, or cosmetic.

AOD-9604 is classified under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List (Section S2.2.3, Growth Hormone Fragments), at all times, for tested athletes.

What is AOD-9604?

AOD-9604 is a synthetic 16-amino-acid peptide corresponding to a modified fragment of the C-terminal region of human growth hormone (residues 176-191, with a tyrosine substitution added for stability). It was developed at Monash University in Australia during the 1990s to isolate the fat-metabolism activity attributed to that region of the growth hormone molecule, without the broader growth-promoting and glucose-affecting activity of the full-length hormone.

Research History and Evidence

The available research on AOD-9604 includes both preclinical investigations and human safety and tolerability studies.

  • Preclinical lipid-metabolism research. A study in obese mice examined the effects of AOD-9604 on lipid metabolism and compared responses in normal and beta-3 adrenergic receptor knockout mice. The research investigated measures related to lipolysis and lipogenesis and explored the role of the beta-3 adrenergic receptor pathway in the observed effects.
  • Additional metabolic research. Another published study examined the effects of oral administration of a synthetic fragment of human growth hormone on lipid metabolism.
  • Human safety and tolerability research. A published human study specifically evaluated the safety and tolerability of the hexadecapeptide AOD9604.

The tolerability data from AOD-9604’s clinical program is genuine and comes from controlled human trials, which distinguishes it from many research-only peptides that have no human trial history at all. That said, this data pertains to the specific discontinued clinical program and should not be read as establishing safety for other doses, routes, durations, or research applications outside that program’s design.

For research-only compounds generally, identity, purity, sterility, dose accuracy, and route all affect the reliability of results, independent of what human trial history exists for the underlying molecule. Research protocols, routes, and any application of this compound are determined solely by the licensed researcher and their institution.

FAQ

What is AOD-9604?
AOD-9604 is a synthetic 16-amino-acid peptide derived from the C-terminal region of human growth hormone (residues 176–191 with an added N-terminal tyrosine). It was designed to isolate the lipolytic (fat-metabolizing) activity of growth hormone without triggering its systemic growth-promoting or diabetogenic effects. It is intended strictly for in vitro testing and laboratory research.
Preclinical studies indicate AOD-9604 triggers lipolysis by upregulating beta-3 adrenergic receptor activity in adipocytes and stimulating hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL). Unlike full-length growth hormone, it does not bind to the classical growth hormone receptor (GHR) or raise systemic IGF-1 levels, avoiding insulin-resistance side effects in animal models.
Although early phase studies and a 12-week trial reported favorable tolerability and modest lipid handling changes, a pivotal 24-week Phase 2b trial in 536 subjects failed to show statistically significant weight loss compared to placebo. Consequently, clinical development for obesity was discontinued in 2007.
No standardized administration protocol exists outside specific historical experimental designs. Protocol routes, frequencies, and doses must be determined solely by licensed researchers within qualified institutional settings. Bodily administration into humans or animals is strictly prohibited by law.
AOD-9604 is an unapproved research chemical and is explicitly banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) under Section S2.2.3 for tested athletes. The FDA classifies it as a Category 2 bulk drug substance with restricted compounding eligibility pending further evaluation. It is not FDA-approved for human or animal therapeutic use.
